New Year, New Fashion Resolutions

By Amanda Cohen on January 1, 2019

2018 is coming to an end. Some of you may be ecstatic about the “new year, new me” mantra, but others might cringe because they aren’t great at keeping New Years’ resolutions. The inability to keep New Years’ resolutions is usually due to the fact that people set unrealistic expectations for themselves and don’t realize that a resolution should be doable so that you aren’t discouraged from changing aspects of your life in the future.

If you can’t think of any resolution you want to comply with in 2019, I’ll help you. A great New Years’ resolution can be focused in the fashion department. Now, don’t worry, I promise to get more specific about these fashion-oriented resolutions… you just gotta read on!

Look Good, Feel Good

This is a resolution I really should implement for myself. If you’re like me, you live for being comfy. Your wardrobe favorites are loungewear and pajamas. Baggy clothes are life. However, it’s easy to fall into habits when dressing solely for comfort. There is no doubt that when I dress up, I feel better and I get a lot done, so why don’t I do it more often? I’m not lazy in many aspects of my life, but I can be during the week when it comes to how I dress.

A great way to break this habit is by choosing one day during the week (Monday-Friday) where you force yourself to dress in a trendier and/or professional manner. Ditch the leggings and opt for cool jeans. Instead of your favorite sweatshirt, go for a cute long sleeve or a sweater. Ditch the Uggs and wear those cool boots that you bought forever ago and swore you would wear one day. Change it up. Do your hair. Apply some makeup. You would be surprised what one day of dressing up can do for your overall self and psyche (not to mention, you will look fabulous).

Clean Out Your Closet

I am terrible about cleaning out my drawers and closet because I always see something and think to myself, “No, I might want to wear that one day and if I get rid of it now I’ll forever regret it.” I promise you, you won’t regret it. Focus your New Years’ resolution on becoming more organized and cleaning out clothes, shoes, and accessories that you no longer need/want. I know cleaning and organizing can be a pain in the butt, but start off small.

Do one drawer a day and then move onto your closet. After that, go into your bathroom and clean out your hair accessories and makeup. When cleaning out your clothes, take the time to try things on because you would be surprised how quickly your body can change when you get older. Make sure you aren’t keeping items that you like, but don’t fit you. In addition, create three different piles: (1) items to sell, (2) items to donate, and (3) items to throw away. Think about how much you can help others just be cleaning out your clothes and accessories, cleaning everything, and donating them to people who need them most or sell them to people who may be looking for a fresh start.

Treat Yourself, But Also Stop Indulging

There are some people who need to treat themselves to clothes because they don’t recognize when they need something new. However, there are others who need to stop maxing out their credit cards because they are buying stuff that they don’t need. A great (and doable) New Years’ resolution is to create a “shopping schedule” that prevents you from overspending, but also allows you to treat yourself once in a while. Of course, if you have an event coming up that requires a new outfit, by all means, buy something (or go on Rent the Runway so you don’t have to buy something you will only wear once), but other than this, here is a great schedule you can keep.

First, allow yourself to indulge and buy something that you want, but don’t need, once a month (or once every other month depending on the price of the item). In addition, anytime a new season rolls around, you can buy certain necessities (i.e. a jacket in the winter or a pair of shorts in the summer). Other than these times, don’t allow yourself to shop online. You will be amazed how much money you will save by not purchasing items that you don’t really want nor need.

These resolutions might not be along the lines of “losing ‘x’ amount of weight” or “putting yourself out there more,” but they are great ways of changing up the fashion characteristics of your life. They aren’t huge, but they are doable and, trust me, they will make a difference in your life. Enjoy the last couple of days of 2018 and welcome 2019 with open arms. Happy New Year everyone!
